Together, we have raised £7,862! Help us reach our goal of £50,000.

As part of our journey towards Denefield’s 50th anniversary in 2026, we have begun celebrating our history while also looking ahead to the future through the Denefield 50 fundraising campaign. This year has focussed on bringing our community together through meaningful events, student involvement and charitable action.
Students and staff have taken part in a range of activities, including Culture Day, Festive Jumper Day, Tech Free Challenge, Get Active Day etc., which brought the school community together while celebrating diversity and creativity. Alongside these events, students have been actively involved in a variety of fundraising activities, showing enthusiasm, teamwork and a strong sense of responsibility.
This term, we hosted a staff vs parents football match as part of our Denefield 50 celebrations. Over 150 parents, students and staff turned out to cheer on both teams, creating a brilliant atmosphere. The match raised £468 for the campaign. Our "Get Active" non-uniform day also raised an impressive £1,506, bringing the combined total from both events to nearly £2,000.

Since the launch of the campaign, we have raised £7,862 towards our overall target of £50,000. These funds are already making a difference. We have invested in new picnic tables and bird boxes, and we have also made a donation to Launchpad, a local charity supporting people facing homelessness in our community. We are also grateful to Ernst and Young, who have pledged £500 in matched funding to support our campaign.

These funds will support improvements for our students and contribute to our ongoing work with Launchpad, helping us make a wider impact beyond the school.
Thank you to all parents/carers, students and staff who took part or supported the events. Moments like these show the strength of our Denefield community as we celebrate 50 years of Success for Life.

Denefield Spelling Bee
This term, our Spelling Bee competition has been a highlight across the school, bringing energy and friendly competition to every year group.
It all started in tutor groups, where students went head to head in a series of spelling challenges. Each tutor group selected their strongest spellers, who then went on to compete against other students from their house during assemblies. The rounds were exciting and closely fought, with students showing great focus and confidence under pressure.
One student from each house progressed to the grand final, where they competed in front of their peers in a tense and exciting final round. All finalists performed exceptionally well, demonstrating impressive spelling ability and composure.
Congratulations to our finalists:
- Sulham – Alfie C (overall winner)
- Kentwood – Bilal H
- Langley – Syed A
- Norcot – Edward P
A special well done to Alfie C, who was crowned the overall winner. Fittingly, the winning word was achievement; a perfect reflection of the effort and success shown throughout the competition.

To celebrate our Attendance stars, we invited students from Year 7 to Year 10, who have worked hard on improving their attendance and reached 96 per cent and above attendance, to a celebration cake party in the canteen during PM tutor time on Thursday 26 March. The event recognised students’ commitment, consistency and positive approach to attendance throughout the term. The studenst were also invited to bring along a friend to this celebration. It was a well-deserved opportunity to celebrate their achievement together, and a lovely way to thank students for the effort they continue to show.

This term, our Debating Club stars competed in their very first debating event, entering the Newbury Agricultural Society's Schools Debating Competition against teams from several local schools.
Despite it being their first experience of competitive debating, the team showed great confidence, composure and preparation. They delivered a standout performance in the earlier rounds, winning their match against Park House School. Congratulations to Beth L., Phoebe C., Samuel M., Markos S., Rusne P., Harry P. and Chase A. for representing Denefield so well.
Although we did not take home the overall title, this was a hugely promising start for a team competing for the very first time. The students demonstrated excellent communication, teamwork and the ability to think clearly under pressure, skills that will serve them well both inside and outside the classroom.
Following the competition, Mrs McHugh brought the team together at their next club session to celebrate their achievement, share feedback on their performance and look ahead to future events. With this experience under their belts, we are excited to see what this talented group will achieve next.
Our Debating Club meets every Monday during lunchtime and is run by Mrs McHugh. All students are welcome to come along and give it a try.

Trips and Visits
Sixth Form visit to Go Perform
This term, our Year 12 and 13 students visited Go Perform, a specialist sports performance gym. The trip gave students the chance to experience first-hand the concepts they have been learning about in their exam specification.
During the visit, students took part in a number of practical tests, including hypoxic training, gas analysis and the use of an anti-gravity machine. They also had the opportunity to learn about the different career roles within the sports industry and the qualifications needed to pursue them.
It was a valuable experience that brought classroom learning to life and gave students a real insight into the world of sports science and performance. A big thank you to the PE department for organising such a worthwhile trip.

Modern Foreign Languages Year 9 and Year 10 trip to Calais
This term, our Year 9 and Year 10 French students travelled to Calais for an exciting three-day trip organised by the MFL department. The trip gave students the chance to experience French language and culture first-hand, putting their classroom learning into practice in a real-world setting.
Over the course of the trip, students visited a range of places including a local goat cheese farm, where they learned about the cheese-making process entirely in French. They also explored the Nausicaa Sea Life Centre, visited the World War Two museum Musee Memoire in Calais, and enjoyed a town trail through Boulogne-Sur-Mer. Students had the opportunity to browse Boulogne Market and Cite Europe, practising their language skills while picking up local items.
There was plenty of time for fun too, with beach activities at Wissant and evening entertainment at the accommodation. The trip also included a visit to a working snail farm, giving students a unique insight into local French agriculture.
It was a fantastic experience that brought the French language to life beyond the classroom. A big thank you to Mr Adango, Miss Paxford and Mrs Jackson for accompanying the students and making the trip such a memorable one.

Combined Cadet Force visit
Our CCF students recently took part in a Skills at Arms session, where they developed their understanding of safe handling and drill techniques using training equipment in a controlled environment. During the session, students focused on key skills such as positioning, coordination and attention to detail, while following clear safety procedures at all times. It was great to see their level of concentration, discipline and teamwork throughout.
Sessions like these play an important role in building confidence, responsibility and self-discipline as part of the CCF programme.

Year 8 German Play
This term, we welcomed Onatti Productions to Denefield to perform a German language play for our Year 8 MFL students. The play, called Das Gruselhaus, told the story of two best friends who get caught in a thunderstorm during a hike and take shelter in a creepy, abandoned house deep in the woods.
What starts as a simple wait for the storm to pass quickly takes a turn, as strange noises fill the rooms, furniture begins to move and an uneasy feeling takes over. Left on their own, they try to figure out whether the house really is haunted.
The actors also brought students into the action, interacting with them throughout the performance and inviting them to take part in scenes. This made the show feel spontaneous, fun and highly engaging, with plenty of laughs and surprises along the way.
It was a fantastic opportunity for students to hear German spoken in an entertaining and memorable way, helping to bring the language to life outside the classroom. A big thank you to Onatti Productions for a brilliant show and to the MFL department for organising the visit.

Success for Life - Drugs Education
As part of our Success for Life programme, which covers all aspects of personal, social and health education, Denefield has a drugs education strategy to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn and understand the risks, the law and the facts about harmful drugs and substances.
This term, we welcomed back Luna, a trained detection dog from RFA Security, accompanied by her handler Steve, for another site search across the school. We are pleased to report that, once again, no illegal substances or traces of substances were detected, and we can confirm to parents, carers, students and staff that our site was found to be drug-free.
The purpose of these visits is twofold. Firstly, to ensure that students are learning in a safe and drug-free environment. Secondly, it sends a clear message to all students and members of the local community that illegal substances will not be tolerated in any form at Denefield.
We are not complacent, and we will continue to carry out site searches in the future. It is also a good time to remind students and parents that vaping and vaping paraphernalia, while currently legal, are not allowed on the school site, in the same way that cigarettes and other smoking paraphernalia are banned. Pouches, also known as snus, in all forms are also not permitted on the school site.

Kids College
We are thrilled to have completed another fantastic term of Kids College, where Year 5 and 6 students from local primary schools explored exciting courses in science, technology, and the arts. The courses provided an excellent opportunity for students to make new friends and get a taste of life at Denefield.
A big thank you to all the students, parents/carers, and staff for their support. We hope the experience has helped students feel more confident and excited about transitioning to secondary school.
We look forward to welcoming many of you back next year for more fun!

We are back with another fantastic edition of 'Staff Spotlight'.
This term, we are proud to feature Mr Nicholls, our Head of Creative and Performing Arts Faculty, who has been part of the Denefield community for 26 years.
Mr Nicholls studied at Bradford College of Art before completing his teacher training in Manchester. He taught in Oldham and Wokingham, and held a Head of Department role at John Hampden Grammar School in High Wycombe, before joining Denefield in September 2000.
|
|
Interestingly, teaching was not always the plan. 'I went into it because I fancied another year at university,' he admitted. 'But I really enjoyed it, and I have never looked back'. He did spend some time working as a graphic designer before training, but quickly realised teaching was where he wanted to be. 'Teaching is more fun, generally. And sometimes we get things wrong, but you need to do your best not to get it wrong if you possibly can'.
When asked what has kept him at Denefield for so long, Mr Nicholls was clear. His passion for teaching has always been at the heart of it. He compares it to a footballer who wants to keep playing for as long as possible. ‘Teaching is the best bit. Why would you want to move on from that?’.
Over the years, he has built some close friendships within the school. He speaks fondly of former colleague Mr Boys, who was his line manager for many years, as well as current colleagues Mr Simpson and Mrs Davis. 'I have always had good people around me here,' he said. 'That makes a real difference'.
On the students, he is full of praise. 'The kids at Denefield are just as talented and capable as anywhere else. Whenever I take them to a gallery, they never let me down'. He has taken students to the Tate Gallery and on trips to Venice, Florence and Rome over the years. He is now teaching the children of former students, something he finds genuinely special. 'When we have an Open Evening, I meet people I taught 20 years ago. It is amazing to see them'.

He is also proud of where former students have ended up. One of Denefield Alumnus, Carl Beasley, whom Mr Nicholls taught, is now a practising artist who recently held his first solo exhibition in London.
Outside of school, Mr Nicholls has a real passion for food and cooking. He loves experimenting in the kitchen, particularly with Italian and French cuisine, and describes it as one of his favourite ways to unwind.
Football is another big part of his life. He is a devoted Wolverhampton Wanderers season ticket holder and attends as many home matches as he can. 'I tend not to go to the midweek ones because it is too far on a school night,' he said, 'but when we were in the Europa League, I was not going to miss that. I thought it was probably a once-in-a-lifetime thing'.

Denefield is proud to have Mr Nicholls as part of our community. His dedication and passion for art have made a lasting impact on students across 26 years — and continue to do so every day.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
|
|
On 3, 4 and 5 March, our students took to the stage for this year's school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. All three evenings were completely sold out, with packed audiences filling the hall each night.
After weeks of rehearsals, late evenings, costume fittings and countless run-throughs, the production came to life on stage in spectacular fashion. From the cast bringing the story to life, to the orchestra providing the music, and the backstage team working behind the scenes to make every moment run smoothly, this was a true team effort from start to finish.
The energy, confidence and commitment shown by our students throughout the rehearsals and performances was fantastic to see. Every scene, song and moment on stage reflected the dedication and hard work that went into creating such a vibrant and memorable show.
A huge well done to everyone involved, from our talented performers and musicians to all staff and the support team who worked together to make this year's production such a success. It was a truly proud moment for Denefield.

On Thursday 5 March, we celebrated World Book Day across the school with a day dedicated to the joy of reading. Miss Thomas and the library team organised a range of activities and competitions to get students involved and excited about books.
|
|
|
Students had the chance to take part in our World Book Day Book Bingo challenge, where they were encouraged to explore different genres and discover new titles. There was also a Design Your Own Book Jacket competition, which gave students the opportunity to get creative and bring their favourite stories to life through their own artwork and designs.
Congratulations to Ayesha K. who won the Design Your Own Book Jacket competition and was awarded a book by Miss Thomas. Isla W and Sehaj V were the runners-up. Well done, Girls!
|
|
|
Staff got into the spirit of the day by dressing up as well-known book characters, bringing a little extra storybook magic to the corridors and classrooms. It was great to see so many members of staff joining in and making the day memorable for our students.
World Book Day is a wonderful reminder of the important role reading plays in building imagination, curiosity and confidence. A big thank you to Miss Thomas and everyone who helped make the day such a success.
