A Message from our New Chair of Trustees - Stephen Lewis

'It is a real privilege to be writing this introduction as the new Chair of Trustees at Denefield. I step into this role at an exciting moment in the school’s journey, following another year of impressive success and growth.

This summer’s exam results were remarkable across both GCSE and A level/BTEC, reflecting not only the talent and determination of our students, but also the dedication of our staff and the unwavering support of families. From students taking up places at Russell Group universities and prestigious apprenticeships, to those making their next steps in vocational routes, Denefield continues to deliver on its promise of Success for Life.

But education at Denefield is about more than just results. At the heart of our work are the CHARACTER values – Confidence, Happiness, Articulation, Resilience, Ambition, Courage, Tolerance, Empathy and Respect. These values guide everything they do, shaping well-rounded young people who are ready to thrive in the world beyond school. They are particularly pertinent in today’s world, where challenges can test our resolve; developing strength of character ensures our students are prepared not only to succeed but also to contribute positively to society.

In short, our values help nurture students from roots to flight: giving them the grounding, stability and support they need to grow, and then the confidence, skills and ambition to soar into their futures.

We are delighted that this September, we have welcomed more students into Year 7 than ever before. As our student body grows, we continue to recognise and celebrate the richness of our diverse community. We are deeply committed to ensuring that every student feels seen, supported and empowered, especially those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Through tailored support and inclusive practices, we help all learners reach their full potential and thrive both academically and personally.

This growing demand reflects the confidence that families place in Denefield and the education we provide. To meet this expansion, our portfolio continues to strengthen as we welcome talented new staff across the school including a new Head of Music, whose leadership opens up a new wealth of opportunity in performance, creativity, and cultural life.

We are also continuing to invest in our facilities to create the very best learning environment. Over the summer, we developed a brand-new Sixth Form common room, designed in consultation with students, providing an excellent space for both study and social time. Alongside this, we have further developed our IT provision with a fully furnished IT centre and the latest 3D printing technology, ensuring our students are equipped with the tools and skills they need for the future.

This year, we are placing a particular focus on attendance. We know that every day in school matters, not just for learning but for belonging, friendships, and opportunity. Our aim is to encourage students to want to come to school, to feel inspired, supported and excited about their day. Working together as staff, parents, carers and trustees, we can ensure that every young person at Denefield feels that sense of purpose and connection.

Looking ahead, September 2026 will mark Denefield’s 50th birthday. This milestone will give us the chance to reflect with pride on all that has been achieved over the last half-century, while also looking confidently to the future. It will be a time to celebrate the generations of students, staff, parents, and community members who have shaped Denefield into the school it is today. We look forward to commemorating this golden anniversary together, recognising our heritage while reaffirming our commitment to excellence for the next fifty years.

Denefield remains a school rooted in community. Whether through academic success, sporting achievements, artistic creativity, or service opportunities, our students are showing daily what it means to grow in character and to make a difference.

As I look ahead to the coming year, I feel confident, optimistic, and proud of all that Denefield stands for. On behalf of the Trust Board, I thank you for your continued support and invite you to join us in celebrating, encouraging and inspiring the next generation.

If you would like to know more about how the Trust Board supports the school or would even like to add your own support by joining us as a trustee, Please email the Governance Professional at GovPro@Denefield.org.uk. We would love to hear from you!'

Warm regards,

Stephen Lewis, Chair of Trustees

Sporting  Achievements

This term has been an exciting one for sport, with our students demonstrating real skill, dedication and teamwork across football anf rugby. They have trained hard, supported one another, and represented the school with pride in every fixture.

Football

Our U16 Girls' team was crowned league champions after winning eight out of ten matches, showing great teamwork and determination throughout the season. The U14 Girls' team has also had an excellent run, as they remain unbeaten so far with strong wins against several local schools. Both teams have represented Denefield with pride and continue to go from strength to strength.

Rugby

Our boys' rugby teams have shown commendable spirit and excellent teamwork this term. Every player, new or experienced, played a vital part in the successful start of the season.

The results for different fixtures are as follows:

House competitions

The Great Denefield Bake Off Challenge

The Great Denefield Bake Off began with 14 enthusiastic entrants in Round 1, each asked to represent their culture or identity through baking. The standard of entries was exceptional, and eight finalists were selected to compete in the final.

The last round, themed Denefield 50, challenged students to produce a showstopping cake within 90 minutes. From chocolate and orange to lemon and blueberry, every creation reflected an impressive mix of skill, imagination and flair. Judging was based on creativity, flavour, texture and interpretation of the theme.

After a closely contested final, Millie S. (Year 7, Kentwood) emerged as the 2025 Bake-Off Champion. Lottie V. (Year 8, Norcot) took second place, followed by Emily T. (Year 7, Sulham) in third and Eloise W-J. (Year 8, Sulham) in fourth. With Millie’s winning bake, Kentwood House claimed the overall Bake Off title for this year.

Special thanks go to Mrs Gough for organising another memorable competition, which also marked the start of our Denefield 50 celebrations.

The Great Denefield Drawing Challenge

The Great Denefield Drawing Challenge provided a different kind of artistic test. Finalists were tasked with completing a live portrait of Mr Adango using only charcoal and pencil, all within a 30-minute time limit. The focus, creativity and composure displayed by the students were remarkable, resulting in four striking portraits that impressed both staff and judges.

Congratulations to Maham (Year 10, Norcot), who was crowned this year’s champion, and to Izzy (Langley), who earned the runner-up position. Well done also to Ivan (Kentwood) and Maya (Sulham) for their impressive work.

Both competitions have not only celebrated artistic skill and imagination but also highlighted the enthusiasm and teamwork that define our school community. Events like these continue to remind us that Denefield’s success is built on creativity, participation and House pride.

Trips and Visits

Year 7 Windsor Trip

More than 180 of our Year 7 students enjoyed their first school trip of the year with a visit to Windsor, combining Geography and History fieldwork in a day full of learning and exploration.

As part of their Geography studies, students carried out practical fieldwork activities, including land use surveys, pedestrian counts and field sketches. These tasks helped them investigate how Windsor has evolved over time and adapted to meet the demands of tourism. The information gathered will be used in upcoming lessons, providing an excellent foundation for their learning this term.

In History, students explored the fascinating transformation of Windsor Castle, tracing its development from a simple Motte-and-Bailey structure to the grand stone fortress it is today. The trip offered a valuable opportunity for students to see first-hand how historical and geographical themes connect in real-world contexts.

Throughout the day, students represented Denefield with pride. Their curiosity, enthusiasm and exemplary behaviour were praised by members of the public and staff alike. The trip was not only an engaging start to the academic year but also a wonderful way to build confidence and teamwork among our newest students.

Visitors to Denefield

Headteacher's Open House

The Headteacher’s Open House is usually held twice a year and gives parents/carers of students from Years 7 to 13 an opportunity to meet with Mr Towill and members of the senior leadership team. The recent session focussed on students’ welfare, progress and general school life, allowing parents/carers to share their views and discuss how we can continue to support every student to achieve success for life.

Berkshire Music Trust

Our Year 7 students recently took part in a fantastic interactive music session led by the Berkshire Music Trust. The visiting musicians introduced a range of woodwind instruments, including the bassoon, clarinet, flute and saxophone, and demonstrated how each produces sound in different ways.

The session ended on a high note as the musicians performed well-known tunes, including the Harry Potter and the Pirates of the Caribbean themes, inviting our students to sing along and perform with them. The hall was filled with energy and enthusiasm, making it a truly memorable experience for everyone.

A big thank you to Berkshire Music Trust and to Mr Lines, our new Head of Music, for organising this inspiring and engaging workshop.

Education Business Partnership - 'Guess My Job'

Our Year 7 students took part in their first Careers Event, Guess My Job, organised in collaboration with the Education Business Partnership.

Volunteers from a range of professions visited Denefield to help students explore the world of work in a fun and interactive way. In small groups, students met different volunteers and asked yes-or-no questions to guess what job each person did. After five minutes, the volunteers revealed their professions and shared how they got into their careers, what their roles involve, and which subjects helped them along the way.

The event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about a variety of career paths and to start thinking about their own futures. A big thank you to all the visiting professionals and to Mrs Jackson for organising such an inspiring day.

Sixth Form - Restart a Heart

Earlier this term, our Sixth Form students took part in a practical and inspiring Restart a Heart workshop led by the Community First Responders from the NHS Foundation Trust.

The session gave students the opportunity to learn vital lifesaving skills, including how to recognise a cardiac arrest, perform CPR safely and work together effectively in an emergency. Students gained a real understanding of how quick action can make all the difference when every second counts.

We are proud of our Sixth Formers for engaging so positively and for developing such important skills that could one day help save a life.

Staff Spotlight

We are back with another fantastic edition of ‘Staff Spotlight’.

This term, we are proud to feature Mrs Fogarty, our Librarian and Learning Resources Centre Manager.

Since joining us in 2015, Mrs Fogarty has been at the heart of the Denefield Library, creating a welcoming and inspiring space for students to read, learn and connect.

{item_alt_tag}

Mrs Fogarty joined Denefield in 2015 as a Cover Supervisor, unsure at the time if teaching was the right path for her. During her early years, she often supported the librarian in her free periods; a role that sparked a new passion. When the opportunity arose to lead the library in 2017, she stepped into the position and has never looked back.

Reflecting on what she enjoys most about her work, Mrs Fogarty said, ‘It’s such a privilege to see the students grow from Year 7 to Sixth Form. Some of them start as library helpers and stay involved every year and it’s lovely to watch that journey.’

Over the years, Mrs Fogarty has introduced a range of library clubs and events designed to make reading engaging and fun for everyone. From book clubs and creative activities to themed competitions, she ensures there is always something for students to look forward to. She has noticed growing enthusiasm for these events in recent years, especially after the decline in reading interest following COVID.

In the decade at Denefield, she has seen the library evolve into a welcoming, creative and inclusive space for all students. ‘It’s not just about reading,’ she explained. ‘It’s a comfortable, safe space where students can work, relax or simply be themselves.’

Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family. She loves board games, particularly Sagrada, and meets with friends every few months to play Dungeons & Dragons. She describes herself as a quiet introvert who finds joy in visiting the theatre, cosy evenings with a good book and quality time with loved ones.

Denefield is proud to have Mrs Fogarty as part of our community. Her warmth, creativity and commitment have made the library a place where every student feels welcome, supported and inspired to achieve success for life.

Denefield Culture Day

This term, we were proud to begin our Denefield 50 celebrations with one of the most vibrant events of the year so far; Denefield Culture Day. This one-of-a-kind celebration brought together students, staff, families and our wider community in a joyful display of unity, pride and creativity.

The day was full of colour, music and flavour, with students and staff showcasing traditions, food and customs from around the world.

At lunchtime, our canteen, managed by Harrison catering, offered dishes from around the world, including food from Italy, Indonesia, China, Belgium, America and India. This gave students the chance to enjoy new tastes and experience global cuisine right here at school.

During the tutor time after lunch, students and staff took part in a fashion show, proudly showcasing clothing from their cultures and sharing the meaning behind their outfits. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the diversity within our school community. To watch the fashion show on Instagram, please click on the button below.

The celebrations continued into the evening with our Culture Day Showcase, open to families, friends and members of the community.
