Vocabulary Handbooks
Learning new words helps pupils in every subject. The more words pupils know, the easier it is for them to understand what they read and to do well in lessons.
Each week, pupils are given key vocabulary to learn as part of their homework. They should spend 25 minutes a day practising these words using the steps in their practice book: look at the word and its meaning, say it out loud, cover it, write it from memory, then check and correct in red pen. Tutors check this practice in tutor time, and pupils are also tested on these words in lessons and in termly assessments.
To help at home, please encourage your child to find a quiet space, away from their phone, to complete this homework.
The booklet should stay at home. If your child would prefer to do this homework in school, spare copies are available. Watch the video below, in which Mrs McHugh explains how to use your vocabulary handbook.
