This blog is appropriately titled ‘Happiness’, not simply because the school community has just returned from the half term break refreshed and ready for hard work, but more in terms of the elation of what we have collectively achieved over the past three years.
Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally. It comes from what you do consistently
As you will be aware, on Tuesday 16 January 2018 the school was visited by a team of three Ofsted Inspectors. The timing was not a surprise as the previous inspection took place in June 2014 and Ofsted works on an approximate cycle of three years for schools judged as GOOD. However, every day is important to the staff at the school and therefore, although the inspectors were here, it was important that as far as possible, the school continued as normal.
A little progress each day, adds up to big results
Our visit took place over one day, where inspectors took the time to immerse themselves in the culture of the school, making every effort to understand what a typical daily experience for a Denefield student is like. They observed over 25 lessons, met with senior and middle leaders, observed break, lunch and after school conduct and met with groups of students.
Many of you will have already taken the time to read the letter which was sent to you confirming that the school remains a GOOD school, something that senior leaders and staff were already aware of. One of the greatest compliments that the Lead Inspector paid us was that ‘we know our school’ and that we are ‘highly evaluative’.
Of course as a community we are delighted that Ofsted recognised the hard work and commitment demonstrated by staff, students and the wider community through awarding this judgement. However, for all of us, it is now about ‘next steps’: knowing your school is about being proud of the things that you do well, whilst having a clear understanding of the areas that need additional attention.
We strongly believe in being the best that we can be, and therefore we will, with your support, work to improve Denefield School even further. You will have seen the statement in the outcome letter in which inspectors comment that:
‘You and your leadership team are not complacent and you are implementing plans ambitiously to help pupils make even greater progress.’
I can assure you that we will continue to challenge all members of this community to be even better than they were the day before, encouraging all to reflect on their own personal standards, aiming to engage them in to setting their expectations higher.
May I take this opportunity to thank all parents/carers for your belief in us and for your continued support.
