Following a busy few weeks in school, we have now reached the end of the academic year. Students across the school are now undoubtedly very excited about starting their summer holidays.
Two weeks ago a group of 11 students returned from an enriching week staying with their German host families from the St Anna Gymnasium in Augsburg. Whilst away they were able to develop their language skills, experience a different way of life and foster friendships which many will have for life. My thanks to Mrs Bodsworth for organising the visit which is now in its 30th year. This is a wonderful achievement for both schools and one which provides fond memories for all those who have participated over the years.
Our second CHARACTER week from 10-14 July was a great success. Last week many of our Year 7 students camped at Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons; they have told us about the fun that they had participating in numerous adventures including hill walking, canoeing and rock climbing as well as furthering relationships with their peers and staff. It was a pleasure to visit Crickhowell on Thursday 13 July and experience for myself a few of the challenges that the students faced! Year 7 students that remained at school had just as much enjoyment, the highlight clearly being the overnight camp on the school field and a visit to Kidzania in London which made the students think about their future career paths. Year 8 and Year 9 benefitted from new experiences through the many sessions planned by staff which included making happy masks, learning essential first aid skills, taking part in a United Nations debate and watching street magic, all activities designed to enhance the CHARACTER of each individual. My thanks to all staff for their preparation and delivery which made the week enjoyable for all.
The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.
On Tuesday 18 July we held our annual Sports Day which was full of competition and excitement. I was delighted to witness the sense of community within each house and the supportive atmosphere. The winners this year were Sulham: congratulations!
Finally, may I thank all of you for your continued support throughout the year. It has been a privilege leading the school as Headteacher and I feel that this community working together continues to achieve a great deal. In a year of new curriculums, new assessments and difficulties with staff recruitment, we have not allowed these challenges to deter us from providing the very best we can for each child. In partnership with you, we strive to continually improve in all aspects and we are committed to building on these firm foundations during the forthcoming year.
A little progress each day adds up to big results.
May I wish you all a very enjoyable summer and I shall look forward to welcoming students, existing and new, on Wednesday 6 September 2017.
