Welcome back to what is now the final term of this academic year.
Our Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 students have now completed a substantial number of examinations which we all hope have gone well. Courage is a key characteristic for young people at this time as, like us adults, there are times when the seeds of doubt creep in. It is therefore, up to us, teachers and parents/carers, to ensure that the students have the courage and confidence to keep trying, especially when times are tough.
Courage is the commitment to begin without any guarantee of success
Many of you will have noticed that the main gate at the front of school has been changed and is now electronic. We are delighted with the functionality to date but will of course keep this under review. If you have feedback for us, please do not hesitate to get in touch. As I stated in my earlier blogs, I am confident that this measure will continue to keep young people and staff at Denefield safe. May I ask parents and carers to work with us in encouraging students to use the pedestrian crossing which means that they enter the school through the middle gate. Cyclists, where possible should also dismount at this point and push their bikes to the bike stands. All of these measures will keep them safe on what is a very busy road before and after school.
Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success
Over the past week we have welcomed a number of prospective parents/carers and their children to the school as part of our Year 5 tours. It fills me with great pride for them to observe what I am able to on a daily basis: a calm, focussed learning environment. I was pleased to see so many familiar faces and to spend time with those visiting for the first time.
It is up to you to see the beauty of everyday things
Some of you may be aware that Denefield School was opened in September 1976 making the forthcoming academic year our 40th anniversary. As a school we will be acknowledging this throughout the year and will share with you how we propose to celebrate in future blogs. However, to begin raising the awareness amongst students, at the end of term we asked students to create a ‘40th Anniversary’ school logo, which they seemed to enjoy immensely. The creativity was outstanding and we will now consider further how we can incorporate the winning design in to our anniversary celebrations.
Create the things you wish existed
Denefield School will be hosting a Summer Fayre on Friday 15 July 2016 from 5.00pm – 8.00pm. Although this is not being hosted on a Saturday, we will be including the traditional Summer Fayre stalls and activities so please come and join us for an evening of fun! Early indications suggest that a BBQ will be in full flow, so at the very least, come and have your supper with us! If you would like to help out at all on the evening or in the lead up to it, please contact Mrs Emerson at firstname.lastname@example.org: she would be delighted to hear from you.
You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together we can do great things
As I have themed this blog ‘Courage’, one of our CHARACTER values, it seems appropriate to make parents/carers aware that on 1 July 2016, we will be hosting our own Race for Life in support of Cancer Research UK. Following the assemblies led by Mrs West prior to half term I can confirm that we would like as many students as possible to participate in support of this fantastic cause. Students will need to pay £1.00 to purchase a sponsorship form and raise a minimum of £10.00 to take part. We are also adding to the fund-raising through hosting a non-uniform day on the day of the race itself, where students will be requested to wear blue or pink, colours chosen by Race for Life. This is a super opportunity for our school community to unite even further in our bid to combat cancer. Further details to follow.
