Success for Life: Denefield’s values and vision
Our aim is that every student, regardless of ability or circumstance, leaves Denefield with the foundations for a rich and fulfilling life. For Denefield students, Success for Life means:
Success for Life is underpinned by the curriculum that we teach and the qualifications that students gain, and by the CHARACTER values that we embed throughout the school. Our CHARACTER values are: Confidence, Happiness, Articulacy, Resilience, Ambition, Courage, Tolerance, Empathy and Respect.
The curriculum and extra-curricular activities at Denefield
We are very proud of our subject-based curriculum, the expertise that our teachers have, and the excellent subject-based facilities that our students benefit from. In Year 7, for example, all Denefield students take English, maths, science, history, geography, religious studies, at least one foreign language (French, Spanish or German), PE, art, music, drama, ICT and design technology. In addition, they take a course called Success for Life, which is designed to give them all the personal and practical skills to thrive in school and beyond. These subjects, as well as the Success for Life course, give students the solid foundation they need to thrive at GCSE and into Sixth Form study. We believe passionately in the development of every individual and so also have a tremendous range of extra-curricular activities. We run multiple sports clubs and teams, music groups and ensembles, our Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, and Greenpower F24 racing car team. All Year 7 students are invited to a week’s activities and camping at Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons, and we organise both local trips to places such as Windsor and London, and international trips to the First World War battlefields in Belgium (history), the Normandy coastline (French) and the galleries of Berlin, Venice and Rome (art). We also run an annual international sports tour.
The house system and pastoral support
Every child is extremely well supported at Denefield. All students are placed into one of four houses – Norcot, Langley, Sulham or Kentwood. They have their own tutor, Head of House and Student Manager. In addition, our tutor groups consist of approximately five students from each of Years 7-11, so incoming Year 7 students can be guided and mentored by those who are older than them. We have weekly assemblies led by senior teachers, by Heads of House, or by students themselves. There are also daily tutor periods, enabling further personal development, growth and reflection.
