The Carnegie Medal is one of the oldest and most prestigious children's book awards. The medal is awarded annually by CILIP: The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Profassionals.
Each year, Denefield participates in the Carnegie awards by running a shadowing group 'Denefield's Brilliant Bookworms'. The aim is to read the shortlisted titles, discuss and analyse them based on the author's use of style, plot and characterisation. Students also have the opportunity to attend the Carnegie conference and work with students from other local schools to perform creative presentations persuading the audience as to which book they think should win the Carnegie awards.
