Denefield’s recently refurbished Library and Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provides a modern and welcoming space for the school community to enjoy. With currently over 13,000 fiction and non-fiction books, journals and multi-media resources and access to over 10,000 academically-approved websites, the Library supports the school curriculum, independent learning and promotes reading for pleasure. The library also houses 20 computers with internet access for use throughout the school day. The library is open from 8.00am - 4.00pm and may be booked for lessons by staff, whilst Sixth Form students have access during independent study periods. The Library is also open at break, lunchtime and after school, when students can borrow books, discover new fiction, do homework or carry out independent research and private study.
The Library aims to support students’ learning, encourage wider reading and promote the importance of libraries in a wider social setting. With a passion for consistent self-improvement, equality of information access and a positive attitude towards learning and reading, Denefield School’s library offers its students an inclusive environment enabling them to become independent users of information fully prepared for the next stage of their lives.
Library Activities and Events
Students are encouraged to join in our range of reading-related activities which take place throughout the year. These include:
• Author visits
• Quizzes and competitions
• Weekly book club
• Termly film nights
• The Carnegie Shadowing Group; with attendance at the Carnegie Conference – a day of presentations, discussions and celebrations with students from other Berkshire schools
• The Berkshire Book Awards; with a visit to the annual Pen2Page Author event hosted by local secondary schools
• World Book Day
• The Annual Spelling Bee competition.
We also have an excellent team of Student Library Helpers and Library Ambassadors who volunteer within the library during the week and who help plan and organise library events for the school community. Any student can apply at the start of each term to join the team.
