CHARACTER and SMSC

At Denefield School we dedicate allocated time each term to promote our key values through the teaching of CHARACTER (PHSE) education.

All lessons are resourced within school to ensure that they meet the specific needs of our students and are delivered to students by different tutors once a term.  Much of the class focus is discussion led to give the opportunity for students to ask questions and consider their ideas in a friendly environment.  Written tasks and activities also support students understanding of each CHARACTER value and this is applied in daily life.

The following topics form part of CHARACTER:

  • Personal confidence
  • Well-being and happiness
  • Employment and the world of work including CV writing and interview skills
  • Resilience and determination
  • Courage
  • Tolerance - including hate crime and personal safety
  • Respect of ourselves and others - including Sex and Relationship Education - SRE
  • Empathy and understanding the world around us.

Students receive their CHARACTER sessions in mixed-sex year groups to ensure a staged and age-appropriate curriculum is offered.

In addition, students are also provided with age-appropriate Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) as part of the specified National Curriculum which is is delivered by year group and in same-sex classes to promote personal safety and awareness and respect.
