Welcome to Denefield Sixth Form. The Sixth Form is vibrant and fully inclusive, offering a wide range of both traditional and vocational courses at Level 3 including the extended project qualification, enabling students to gain the necessary qualifications to progress to university, further training or the world of work. Students will choose a minimum of three Level 3 qualifications as part of their study programme in the Sixth Form. In addition to this, they will also engage in non-qualification enrichment such as community service, where typically Sixth Former students may support in a lower school session. It is important for students to experience a varied programme at Level 3 to develop the indepencence necessary to progress in their chosen next steps.
There is a high level of support with UCAS applications with a substantial proportion of students progressing on to university and so becoming independent is vital for success. We welcome applications from current Year 11 students and external candidates who wish to study in a small friendly environment.
'Achievement in the Sixth Form is now good. A culture of ambitious target-setting, combined with good and often outstanding teaching, has resulted in high levels of achievement and a rapid rise in standards across almost all subject areas.' - Ofsted July 2014.
'Behaviour in the Sixth Form is outstanding with students engaging enthusiastically with their learning. They also make an important contribution to the rest of the school, for example, by providing advice and support to other, younger students.' - Ofsted July 2014
The accommodation for Sixth Form has been purpose built to house a common room and specialist workroom for students as well as a Sixth Form office where our Post 16 Student Manager is available all day to support students with their studies.
The appearance of our Sixth Form students is important to us in presenting a professional approach to Key Stage 5 (KS5) and therefore we expect all students to adhere to the Sixth Form dress code. Students need to consider their appearance and wear clothes that any individual in a professional working environment would wear.
Sixth Form students are assigned a tutor and are expected to attend regular academic mentor meetings to discuss their progress. Tutors are static and only work with Sixth Form students in order to support academic progress and provide effective information and guidance for their next steps.
It is really important that students wishing to apply for Denefield Sixth Form understand the jump from KS4 to KS5 and appreciate that they will need to develop higher levels of independence. Students need to be able to read around their subjects to expand their knowledge and consolidate their learning. Our Route 88 approach supports students to structure their wider reading, enhancing their independence and enabling them to become more effective learners.
Excellent attendance and engagement in studies is vital if students are to achieve their full potential. We encourage our Sixth Form students to take responsibility for their own attendance at school. They are issued with an ID badge which they must use to swipe in and out of the building to record their attendance at school. They are also required to attend fortnightly briefing sessions, regular CHARACTER sessions, and take part in community service activities.
